DI educators identified the following initiatives as essential to future growth of the field:

  • Public education about the need to use Deaf-hearing teams of interpreters
  • Definition of the role of the Deaf interpreter and work towards a common understanding of the role
  • Identification of the domains and competencies that effective Deaf interpreters possess and a national curriculum to provide a standard approach to the teaching of Deaf interpreters
  • On-going research to inform teaching practice
  • Teaching materials that are designed specifically for teaching Deaf interpreter
  • Examination of the CDI test with a view to identify barriers to success
