The following is a description of the roles and responsibilities of Task Force members.

Position Description for NTFDBI Members

The National Task Force on Deaf-Blind Interpreting (NTFDBI) is a task force whose mission is to establish a standard of effective practice to ensure the quality and availability of interpreters for deaf-blind people.  The NTFDBI is comprised of a demographically diverse group of deaf and hearing interpreters, deaf-blind people, interpreter educators and others, all of whom have a vested interest in quality interpretation and interpreter education that will impact deaf-blind people on a national level.

Expectations of Task Force membership are:

·         Personal and/or professional involvement and expertise in deaf-blind interpreting,

·         Ability to work with a group of people on issues pertaining to deaf-blind interpreting on a national level,

·         Ability to attend one to two face-to-face meetings per year and/or participation in monthly or bi-monthly conference calls,

·         Regular and substantive participation in online discussions,

·         Timely responsiveness to emails and online correspondences, and

·         Commitment to group work on projects leading to larger goals and timely follow-through.

1-Week Intensive Training – CDI: Deafblind Focus
August 11 – 17, 2012

Participants in this workshop will recieve extensive training from experienced CDIs and Deafblind individuals. Training includes an introduction to Deafblind interpreting, Deaf Interpreter teams, and more.

7-day training includes

Are you Deaf? Do you like the interpreting process? Interested in becoming a Certified Deaf Interpreter?

What things should a Deaf interpreter do to ensure high quality interpreting services? What kind of interpreting assignment is the Deaf interpreter qualified to perform? What study materials should the Deaf person study in preparation of testing for CDI certification? This track offers an in-depth exploration and practical experience in the application of these questions.

-On Sunday afternoon, the participants would do practices for the written test.

-On Monday, you would have the option to take the RID CDI written/ASL exam.

Requirements:
You already have (or will buy) So You Want to Be an Interpreter: An Introduction to Sign Language Interpreting by Janice Humphrey and Bob Alcorn. Please read this book prior the workshop.

Certification:
You will receive a certification of completion:
8 hours of training on the RID Code of Professional Conduct
8 hours of training on the role and function of a deaf interpreter

You have the option to take the RID CDI written/ASL exam on Monday, June 18, 2012 right after the workshop ends. You will need to make arrangements with RID in submitting your testing fees. Please see http://www.rid.org/education/testing/index.cfm/AID/89 for CDI testing information. Once you’ve submitted your test application be sure to follow up approximately one week to check about receiving an emailed notice that you now have the clearance to take the CDI written/CD-ROM exam. GOALS: Part I focuses on the theoretical and conceptual base of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (aka the Colonomos Model) in a low stress environment. The training offers specific language to discuss interpreting work. Part II focuses on the expansion and application of the theoretical and conceptual base of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (aka the Colonomos Model) presented in Part I. Opportunities for practice will be provided during both parts using ASL, Contact Signs (PSE) and Gestures.
