GOALS:
Part I focuses on the theoretical and conceptual base of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (aka the Colonomos Model) in a low stress environment. The training offers specific language to discuss interpreting work. Part II focuses on the expansion and application of the theoretical and conceptual base of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (aka the Colonomos Model) presented in Part I. Opportunities for practice will be provided during both parts using ASL, Contact Signs (PSE) and Gestures.

About the Presenters:
Betty M. Colonomos is the oldest daughter of Deaf parents and a fluent ASL/English bilingual. She was awarded the Masters Comprehensive Skills Certificate (MCSC) from RID in 1980. She is Director of the Bilingual Mediation Center which provides services in the area of instruction, consultation, BiBi programming, cross-cultural mediation, language assessment interpretation, translation, curriculum development.
Jan Delap is a certified Deaf interpreter in the Washington, DC area, specializing in legal interpreting. For over 15 years, she has interpreted in a variety of legal settings, including hearings and trials in DC Superior Court and other states, as well as depositions and pre-trial hearings in attorney offices. She worked at The Washington Post for 27 years as a typographer and assistant foreman before retiring in March 2001.

National Standards and ASL Webinar

Presenter: Kim Brown Kurz, Ph.D., Chairperson of American Sign Language & Interpreter Education (ASLIE) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)/National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID)
Summary: The Modern Languages Association (MLA) reported in 2009 that approximately 92,000 students are studying ASL in more that 800 programs across the U.S. The importance of standards to support consistent quality of language and culture instruction cannot be overemphasized. The American Sign Language Teachers Association and the National Consortium collaborated on the development of standards for use by teachers and administrators in ASL instruction for K-16 settings, aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) framework. Soon to be published in Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century, the ASL Standards provide guidance in curriculum development and revision.
Dr. Kurz’s presentation will focus on the these newly developed Standards for ASL, how they were developed, their content, and the purpose they serve in the effective teaching of ASL.
Target Audience: Interpreting education program faculty and administrators, ASL instructors, and interested others.

Taking Charge of Your SC:L Written Exam Preparation
When? February 18, 2012 9am to 5pm Where? College of Holy Cross, Worcester, MA
This workshop is for RID Certified Deaf Interpreters who are interested in preparing for the RID Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L) written examination. Presenter will discuss recommended reference materials for preparing for the SC:L and additional resources currently available. RID’s SC:L candidate bulletin will be covered to discuss the four major content areas of the written examination: Language, Judicial Language, Team Interpreting, Professional Issues. Tips and strategies for successful Study Group sessions will be shared with participants. Hands on mock written examination will be conducted with facilitated discussions via large and small group activities. This workshop is conducted in ASL.
This workshop is open only to Deaf Interpreters who hold either a CDI or RSC from RID
Presenter: Stephanie M. Clark, CDI & SC:L, is a certified Deaf interpreter with 16 years of experience in settings ranging from legal/court to platform interpreting work. She holds a Master’s degree in Education from University of Massachusetts with a special focus on Instructional Design and has presented workshops to both Interpreters and Deaf community members on various topics related to Language, Culture, and Interpreting. Stephanie is the co-coordinator of the Road to Deaf Interpreting training series in the Northeast region and is with Sorenson Communications as a Professional Development Specialist.

Deaf Mentor Training is for Deaf individuals who want to gain knowledge and skills in language mentoring. No previous experience as a mentor is needed but it will help individuals already working as mentors to improve their skill.
This event is 8 days. The first 3 days individuals will attend classes where they will learn about mentoring topics. These topics include using technology, providing feedback, writing educational objectives and setting up a mentoring business. The last 5 days will allow the mentors to interact with ASL Immersion participants by using their mentoring knowledge and skills in real life situations. The mentors will encourage skill improvements and model ASL during afternoon field trips.

A 40-hour course designed to provide a sound basis for interpreters to work effectively in mental health settings as part of a professional team. The course includes: Mental health systems and culture, Sources of Communication Breakdown Associated with Mental Illness and Treatment, Interpreters’ Roles, Tools, and Resources, Severe Language Dysfluency and Visual Gestural Communication/CDIs/Interpreters who are Deaf, Psychiatric Emergencies, Confidentiality Ethics and Laws, Support Groups and Community Mental Health Services, Psycholinguistic Errors and Demand Control Schema for Interpreting Applied to Mental Health.

Road to Deaf Interpreting is pleased to announce it’s training series for Deaf Interpreters for the third time! We are now accepting applications for RDI’s program. Deadline is on December 3rd, 2011. First class will start on March 24th/25th, 2012 and continue until April, 2014. We have expanded our program to include 18 workshops that are designed for an intensive learning approach into becoming a Deaf Interpreter. Candidates must take all 18 weekends in a consecutive series.
