Overview: The Staff Deaf Interpreter provides professional, quality

interpreting services to SignOn’s customers while participating in a

collegial, supportive atmosphere with the SignOn Team.

Requirements:

*  Experienced Deaf Interpreter: Certified (CDI) preferred

*  Documented experience working with minimal language Deaf

individuals, non-standard ASL/sign users, and with monolingual

Deaf clients

*  Minimum of 500 hours interpreting experience in various legal and

mental health settings

*  Preferred Deaf-Blind interpreting experience (if none, must

complete training by December 2010 at your own expense)

*  Five-years of experience mentoring, coaching, teaching language

and culture with certified hearing interpreters preferred

*  Experience developing Deaf interpreters preferred

Duties:

*  Be available 30 hours per week to provide part-time staff

interpreting services (Guarantee of 24 hours paid per week)

*  Work schedule will vary from day to day depending on interpreting

demand (priority); this tends to vary from zero to full days;

unless the staff DI is on an interpreting assignment or in the

field mentoring interpreters they will be expected to be in the

office available to interpreters and administrators

*  Remaining time will spend working with SignOn management

providing website support, professional development to staff -

workshops, mentoring, etc. – and whatever is deemed necessary and

appropriate for the benefit of SignOn and its staff interpreters.

Are you Deaf? Do you like the interpreting process? Interested in becoming a Certified Deaf Interpreter?

What things should a Deaf interpreter do to ensure high quality interpreting services? What kind of interpreting assignment is the Deaf interpreter qualified to perform? What study materials should the Deaf person study in preparation of testing for CDI certification? This track offers an in-depth exploration and practical experience in the application of these questions.  On Sunday afternoon, the participants would do practices for the written test. On Monday, you would have the option to take the RID CDI written/ASL exam.

Requirements:
You already have (or will buy) So You Want to Be an Interpreter: An Introduction to Sign Language Interpreting by Janice Humphrey and Bob Alcorn. Please read this book prior the workshop.
Certification:
You will receive a certification of completion:
8 hours of training on the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
8 hours of training on the role and function of a deaf interpreter.

You have the option to take the RID CDI written/ASL exam on Monday morning right after the workshop ends, on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010. You will need to make arrangements with RID in submitting your testing fees. Please see http://www.rid.org/education/testing/index.cfm/AID/89 for CDI testing information. Once you’ve submitted your test application be sure to follow up approximately one week to check about receiving an emailed notice that you now have the clearance to take the CDI written/CD-ROM exam. Jimmy Beldon, CDI, MA, ASLFIRST, llc owner, has been a professional involved in the interpreting field on many levels. He currently teaches in the Interpreter Training Program at St. Catherine University in St Paul, Minnesota. He is a nationally renowned interpreter educator. He is a popular presenter requested to travel across the United States giving workshops on a variety of topics and was served as vice president for RID. Mr. Beldon and his family currently reside in St. Paul, Minnesota.

It is a nine-month program in Colorado offering 11 workshops and 22 workgroups, starting in Fall 2010, on training Deaf interpreters for CDI written and performance tests.
I think all Deaf interpreters in Colorado and nearby states should sign up for the series– and for some Deaf Interpreters (certified or non-certified) who can fly out for a workshop or two, you can check out when their workshops are and sign up for some CEUs.

Preparation for the RID CDI written/ASL Exam

Dates: July 12-16, 2010 9 am-5 pm

Instructors: Brenda Schertz, Judy Shepard-Kegl and John Dunleavy

This course, conducted completely in ASL, reviews and discusses all the recommended readings for the RID CDI test (see http://
www.rid.org/ UserFiles/ File/pdfs/ Certification_ Documents/ CDI_Reference_ Materials. pdf), reviews test-taking techniques for
dealing with multiple choice tests, and provides practice tests and review to identify your strong and weak areas in the categories
tested: Professional Roles and Responsibilities; Preparation for Service Delivery; Provision of Service and Post-service Closure.

In keeping with the RID requirement that applicants for the CDI test have 8 hours of training, we will focus on the RID Code of Ethics
and ethical issues faced by Deaf Interpreters. An additional 8 hours will focus upon the role and function of Deaf Interpreters. 16 hours
of this course will be devoted to those topics.

You have the option to take the RID CDI written/ASL exam on Saturday morning right after the course ends, on Saturday, July 17,
2010. You will need to make arrangements with RID in submitting your testing fees. Please see http://www.rid. org/education/ testing/
index.cfm/AID/ 89 for CDI testing information. Once you’ve submitted your test application be sure to follow up approximately one
week to check about receiving an emailed notice that you now have the clearance to take the CDI written/CD-ROM exam.

A course packet was designed specifically for this course, containing RID standard papers and summaries of all recommended readings,
along with a study guide. A $20 materials fee will be necessary to cover the cost of copies and shipping.

Course fee is $470 and this includes 5 catered lunches. This fee does not include room or hotel arrangements.

Housing: Suites (4 to a suite) are available at the USM dorm (Upperclass Hall) which is across the road from the classroom – the
John Mitchell Center, for $29.05/day without linens per night, per person. Otherwise, you need to add $4/day for linens. Please contact
